"A lifetime's knowledge shimmers on the face of the land in the mind of a person who knows."

Wendell Berry

Michele Satta and his land

The story of the estate began with Michele, born in Varese but with Sardinian origins, and it was on that island that, while still a boy, his real passion for the land initiated: a passion that involved constant dedication and hard work.

He rediscovered the same intense excitement when he transferred to Tuscany during his time at university, at the faculty of Agriculture in Pisa.

Michele began working as a laborer on the Tringali Casanova farm at Castagneto Carducci, where he learned that the farming tradition is an incredibly important heritage that has to be preserved, with patience and respect.

That estate grew peaches and strawberries; wine, on the other hand, was produced in the Maremma and was sold as a product for blending.

In the 1980s Michele founded his own company, deciding to devote himself exclusively to wine and making himself independent by renting some vineyards and a wine cellar.

1983 - 1st Harvest

1983 witnessed his first vintage and the beginning of a story that developed along with that of the Bolgheri D.O.C., which came into being the following year.

The first label with his name, produced by traditional vineyards and in a rented cellar, is 1983, with the white and red DIAMBRA.

1984

Year of production of the first 100% Vermentino from the area, il COSTA DI GIULIA

1987

In 1987 the first settlement as owner, with the purchase of the vineyard of Costa Giulia, already rented, and he built the cellar adapted to modern needs.

Early 1990s

1983 - 1st Harvest

In the early ’90s he purchased all the lands that now make up the estate, gradually giving up all his rental contracts so that he could produce wines exclusively from his own grapes

1991

In 1991, he planted the first vineyard with the decision to produce a Bolgheri Rosso, PIASTRAIA, that is not just an expression of Bordeaux varietals or a search for international taste, but expresses a more Mediterranean viticulture and a more Italian tradition.

Therefore Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese and Syrah, all grapes that somehow he knows and identifies with

For the passion of exploring new possibilities and the firm conviction that in every choice of viticulture a personal practical experience is needed, he also planted a small portion of Tempranillo, Grenache, Petit Verdot, Syrah and Teroldego clones.

1990

The first label of CAVALIERE, 100% Sangiovese with vinification in wood and use of barriques

1993

In ’93 he began collaborating with Ornellaia, as an agronomist; here he realized the true potential of the wines that were being made in this little region and broadened his experience in the international market for top-quality wines.

Bolgheri really took off and lots of investors planted vineyards, following international trends; Michele purchased as much high-quality land as was available near his winery but nevertheless remained faithful to his original idea: that of making wines with as strong an identity as possible.

'95-'05

From ‘95 to 2005, new insights lead to the choice of producing a blend Sauvignon and Vermentino (‘97) and a 100% Viognier with vinification in used barriques (2000).

For the reds the convincing performance of Syrah (produced 100% since 2005) and Teroldego (enters the blends in 2001) are confirmed alongside the Bordeaux vineyards and he improved the style with which Sangiovese can find its incredibly stylish expression even on the coast.

He has been assisted throughout this adventure by his wife Lucia. Of the couple’s six children, two decided to follow in their father’s footsteps: Giacomo, who joined the company in 2015 after earning his degree in agriculture in Milan, and Benedetta, who looks after marketing and communication.

NOWADAYS

Thus the story of the second generation of Sattas began, with a company organization that still focuses predominantly on working together as a family and in which each member brings their own personal experience and professional skills, but especially their passion for making something that is unique, a real one-off product that derives from the vineyard and its encounter with man.
